Really worried about my sons weight!

Ive just read the news storys today about 1 in 3 kids being obese - its so scarey! My son Thomas is 11 and he already weighs nearly 10 stone. He hates doing any sort of exercise and spends most of the weekend playing on the wii with my husband. ive told them they both need to get out and do some exercise!! even playing football in the garden but its not helping.

The main problem is that Tom just wont eat anything me and my husband eat. at the weekend i do a roast for us and potato waffles, beans and bacon for him which i thought was ok.

i know i have got to get him to change before he gets really ill but i dont know what else to try, does anyone have some tips?!! thanks xxx

Hi, I am doing some research into obesity in children so have come across a few useful websites.

Your child may not be obese but the information is still very relevant if you have any worries.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/bigfatproblem/

http://hcd2.bupa.co.uk/fact_sheets/html/child_obesity.html

I would be very grateful if anyone out there who is struggling with their childs weight or was obese as a child themselves could chat to me.

I am interested in how you think you/they came to be obese and what sort of things you/they find diificult to deal with or overcome, whether it is bullying or just lack of support .. anything?

Are children overweight because they don't run around so much or is it purely diet? Should junkfood ads be banned?

What do you think about parents being reprimanded for obese children?

Has anyone had weightloss surgery?

Any thoughts anyone??

Much appreciated~

Hello there,

I think obesity in children is due to a number of factors - high fat and calorie foods, lack of exercise etc etc. But my real bug bear is that there just isn't anything for kids to DO out there. Do you remember youth clubs and the like when we were younger? What happened to those?

I think the key to kids who won't exercise is finding something that they like doing. I have 3 girls who love ballet, gymnastics and soccer. I have heard that boys love karate and stuff like that, but I could be wrong :o) There's a few boys in the ballet class.

WIIs are fantastic - why don't you buy your boy a game like the tennis or badminton ones for it? They will still be moving about and it's better than just sitting there.

Let me know how you get on :o)

Keep Smiling and Eat Well :o)

i believe i became obese because as a child my parents would make me eat everything that was on my plate even if it was quite a large portion therefor expanding my stomach and increasing the amount it takes to fill me up.  i am now 22 and weigh 18 stone and started sotring my life out 8 weeks ago, i have only lost 9 and a half pounds but at least its going the right way.  i thnk that to get your son to lose weight your husband needs to do it to, he is a rold model for your son and if he doesnt do it your son wont and will become obese.  even playing chase round the house or hide ad go seek, it gets him to run and use the stairs.  If you live close enough to school, get him to walk.  i hope this helps as obesity is a very large part of my life and has taken over and i dont like to see young kids going the same way.  i do not believe its always the parents fault and they should only be told they are if they are making teir kids eat bad foods.  sometimes you have to change the way kids think.

anyway i hope this has helped.

Well done on your weight loss! You are obviously working hard at it.

I agree about being told you have to clear your plate no matter if you are full. I think it comes from a time when food was not so cheap and as available, post-war type thinking. But we are now paying the price as a society and with all you can eat restaurants and supersize meals it is no suprise we are facing this issue.

Good point about the father being a role model, the whole family has to make an effort or exercise will just seem like punishment.

Take care x
