My 9 Year Old, the Fashion Guru

Is it me or are kids growing up TOO fast these days? My (nearly) 9 year old won't let me buy clothes for her unless she's with me and has just started to pick out my outfits for work, saying my outfits are too casual. I remember having these conversations with my mum when I was about 15! Anyone else had the same?

my son is label obsessed-wont have anything thats not adidas or nike.i donno where he gets it from cos his dad or me arent like that.id have him dressed in tie dye if i could!!Hes only 9-too young to be worryed bout clothes-same as id say for ur dauhter but what can we do eh?

I know what you mean! My 7 year old has been nagging for a pair of kickers boots?? for school! Apparently they are all wearing them. she's 7 for gdness sake - I'm not wasting money on shoes that she'll grow out of in 6 months!!! I don;t knw!

I thought I'd get off lightly with the clothes thing cos I've got 3 boys, but the 2 eldest are label obsessed. I keep telling them how naff labels are, but they're having none of it. My 14 yr old will only wear Calvin Klein boxers, so I've told him he has to buy them out of his own money. He's now getting into Ralph Lauren!!!! It's that preppy boy look that all his mates are into - neat jumpers, polo shirts. I spose I should be grateful he looks smart, but now his 10 yr -old brother wants this stuff too. Managed to fob him off with Primark jumpers & polos but he says he wants a Ralph Lauren top for Christmas. Help!!!!!!

Thank you! At least I'm not completely on my own! I don't understand labels either - people are paying over the odds just to be walking advertisements for the clothes they're wearing! I like t-shirts that have slogans (my fave says "don't pinch yourself, I am real").

Anyway - for designer gear at cheap prices - EBAY! It's been a godsend for getting things for my neice and nephew.

Dont take it personally. They just want to be like all thier friends and in the trend. Its just instinct to them, and it will probably carry on through to teen years. Its just thier age. x

My kids are grown up now but i'ive 2 5yr old grandaughters and a 2yr old grandson, the girls have really got their own minds already and will only wear what they want , gone are the days when a pair of cheap jeans and trainers would do and are the big names any better made?? I used to be a sewing machinst and we used the same process to make underwear for m&s as we did for woolworths, (they used to be cheap once upon a time ). My youngest daughter takes labels off old clothes to put on cheaper ones I bet nobody can tell the difference when shes got them on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. I also think this is why scool uniforms are a great idea even though there is designer wear out there for that but I can't tell the difference when I see a group of shoolkids together. U nfortunately this is one fad that won't go away but when my kids were younger if they reaaly wanted something expensive i wouldtell them i would willing go halfs with them and i think they used to look after things much better if they had to do that. Good luck anyway might need a second mortgae b4 long  HA ha

my 8 year old would dress like a hooker if I let her. Could her 27 bratz dolls be to blame? has anyone else got a daughter who's addicted to bratz? i'm sick of their feet falling off and their mult-coloured legs lying around my sitting room.

I know what you mean - with three daughters, we are drowning in a pool of Barbies, Bratz and their numerous cheap plastic accessories! My 9 year old is growing out of them now though, I don't see her playing with her dolls as much as she used to.

I do blame the dolls though for fashion - also I think they have a huge role to play in eating disorders. I want to see normally proportioned chubby dolls! I remember Early Learning Centre did some chubby dolls a few years ago but they were discontinued - perhaps consumers are to blame also?

Agree Nina. When I was a girl Sindy was THE doll to have - and she looked like a real woman. As mas as it sounds dolls ARE role models for girls along with celebs and pop stars, and they're all skinny too. Bratz dolls are disgusting looking and Barbies aren't much better

hi, i have 2 girls aged 9 and 11. my 11 year old has been fasion awear since she was about 6 but the 9 year old couldnt care less what she wears. how i've delt with it is  give the child a choose 1 dear item of clothing or 2 cheaper ones of simaler desigh its worked here (so far.)

if that doesnt work try the charity shops you can pick up bargins sometimes, including designer items. last summer i got rebok trainer and mules for £5 for both

I remember liking clothes when I was as ounga s five or six, but my mum was a seamstress, so I was always in the latest gear (Even if she did make it herself)

Kids always want the latest things, my 9-year-old neice wanted a iphone for christmas!
