Proper Indian Food :o)about 1 year agoWell, here is one recipe to get you all started, as Hannah asked me to post a recipe on here for a curry you can give to young children. Please follow the instructions careful and remember that the Indian food I eat is very different to the stuff served in Indian restaurants. Cooking time, about 45 mins Ingredients: About a tea cup full of yellow split lentils 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon tumeric (haldi) 1 teaspoon garam masala 3/4 cloves of garlic (finely chopped) 2 ounces ginger, peeled and grated 2 thin green chillies (finely chopped) Butter or cooking oil as required (use lots of butter to make it creamy) 1 onion
Method: 1) Put the lentils into a roomy saucepan and add water - just enough to cover. 2) Add the salt and tumeric to the saucepan and put it on to a slow simmer (you'll need to keep checking to make sure it doesn't bubble over or the water doesn't evaporate) For very young children, don't put any salt in or use very little 3) Peel and chop the onion and fry it in a pan with the butter/oil, garlic, ginger and chillies. Again, for very young children, leave out the chillies altogether - it will still taste nice. You will need to slowly fry tis until the onions turn golden (takes about 20mins to half an hour, depending on your stove) 4) Add the garam masala - or leave out for young children 5) Once this is fried nicely, then add to your simmering saucepan 6) Simmer for about 20 minutes more until it resembles a soup 7) Serve with chapatties, naan bread, rice etc. I hope this is OK, you can use different types of lentils and they all have different cooking times. Feel free to add more or less of the ingredients as you see fit. HINT: For small children and toddlers, don't use any chillies, salt or garam masalA. For adults, you should add this to taste. Remember, it's best to use too little and then add some later than use too much and not be able to eat the curry because it's too spicy! Let me know if you've tried it and what you thought.
