All the kids at school - hooray? Maybe not...

I went to a school meeting yesterday morning about Jassie starting school in September.

I know this sounds silly but it's really breaking my heart that my girls are growing up! I wasn't this bothered about the older two starting but Jassie starting school seems so final - they have finally left babyhood behind. I think what I miss most is them being babies because they are totally dependent on you and you're the centre of their world. When they start school, they're subjected to a lot more than at home and also to other people's opinions and I'm sure that changes them. Not for the worse, but I still don't like it!

Am I being mad? When Simie started school two years ago, I was laughing and said "two down, one to go!" and I was pregnant with Jassie when Ellen started school and it all happened in a blur. I suppose I have more time to dwell now on these things. I should be glad, but I already feel like I have that empty nest syndrome and my oldest isn't even 10 yet!

I don't want to turn into one of those mad clingy mothers (I admit I'm already mad) - but I am in serious danger of doing so!

I think i'll feel the same when my two are both at school! although i'm looking forward to the time ill get to myself and the prospect of havingmy own little business! I might even be able to have a tidy house most of the day lol! isn't it funny how kids are like little (or maybe not so little) twisters that throw all their toya all over the house (never mind just one room!) . I think you are feeling totally normal and once you have gotten over that before you know it they will all be getting married and moving out lol! but enjoy the years you have with them, you never know when it all moght come to an abrupt end! :( (Man i'm gonna mis my girls lol)

I'm sure you'll find something to fill your time with when your girls start school. When I was off work, I wondered how I fit everything in and that was not working!

What business do you want to start up?

the cottage we live in used to be a holiday cottage, and next year we will be moving into the main farm house so this will be free, so were going to get it done out and turn it into a holiday cottage again! It already has a base as it was busy all year round! All i need is the guest books and the other info that my father-in-law saved so that i can see where they went right and where they went wrong! not charging enough is one prob, for a cottage that slept 6 at the time and a cot etc the most they charged was £300 per week thats with everything included! Done out properly with a welcome pack etc... im thinking more along the lines of 400-500 per week depending on the season of course! but this time it will sleep up to 8 maybe 9. I have been looking into it all already and getting prices from other holiday cottages in the area and what there is round Dumfries & Galloway and it looks promesing! all i need is for my mother-in-law and father-in-laws divorce to come through so that my mother-in-law can move out! heres hoping all goes well!

Hi Nina, I know how you feel, it's like a final hurdle of the child being small, when they start school. When they put the uniform on they grow older sooo quickly. I felt it when Eddie went to school, because I thought he was my last, now I have the baby, its going to be strang, I don't want to think that far ahead, I have only just given up breastfeeding. Talk about holding on to him staying a baby, he is 13 months and I have only just stopped the breastfeeding!...he'll be 4o yrs old before he moves out of home !...just kidding, I want my children to have life experiences, but I guess, as parents, we only want them to have the happier experiences, which isn't realistic, We know what a terrifying world it is, did you read the article on here about knife crime, that's the trouble it can happen to anyone anywhere. My kids have had there first week back at school, and want the summer hols to hurry up, its a shame they are wishing there lives away...waffling, Nykita, your holiday cottage sounds great, a nice little get-a-way, in scenic scotland, bye for now girls (jibberish over!)

That's why I like coming on here because I can say what I feel and get reassurance that I'm not the only one. I suppose it feels strange because I'm not usually the crying, setimental mum - I'm far too practical. In the past, when the girls have reached milestones, I've been pleased but then immediately thought "well that's done, what's next?". I suppose it's a good thing that I have time to dwell on these moments because I won't get them again.

Another reason I've just thought of for this worring is that Jassie just doesn't LOOK old enough for school yet. Ellen and Simie are both very tall for their age and are taller than most of the kids two classes above them in school. Jassie is such a tiddly little thing. Mind you, she can hold her own, no problems - we won't have any worries about her not standing up for herself *lol* I think all youngest children are the same!

Your holiday cottage sounds FAB Nykita - just let me know when it's ready!

lol kids grow up way to fast!! I mean i cant wait to see what they will look like and what they will do with their lives but at the same time i dont want them to grow up cos i know they wont be here forever and will have their own lives and ill no longer be their centre focus! lol (how selfish is that hehe). I mean Hope is almost 3 and it seems like only yesterday she was born!

Don't worry i'll be sure to let everyone know when the cottage is ready lol, the sooner we can get my mother-in-law to move out of the farm house, we can get things moving and get the cottage ready! I'm really looking forward to it though, its something i can do with the kids and i can run round after the kids at the same time. I'm hoping to expand in the future too, maybe even have a little holiday village and buy a farm somewhere else for my hubby as he could never giveup farming. im so going to love being able to make money again! It feels horrible not being able to help make some money! hehe that will put a smile back on my face and hopefuly take the strain off our marriage where money is concerned!

Sounds like you've got it all planned! What a good idea! I sometimes wish I lived somewhere more scenic (I live in a city) but I couldn't be too far from any shops and we have some nice parks nearby. Is it countryside where you live?

I suppose I'm feeling a bit left out now the girls are getting older because Ellen and Simie sometimes say to me that they don't want me playing with them! I know it sounds ridiculous but that hurts! Thankfully I still have Jassie to play Polly Pockets with (we're addicted to Polly, me and Jassie) but for how much longer?

My hubby says it's my fault for making them so independent *lol* They are feisty little things even now and prefer to do everything themselves. I stopped bathing Ellen a year ago and Simie just needs her hair washing. Jassie can even dress herself with minimal help.

I've always let them do stuff themselves as far as possible but I think personality comes into it a lot. Like all three of my girls, when they were given juice cups with lids, didn't want bottles anymore! They've always preferred to feed themselves (god the MESS when they were younger *lol*) and they've always put their own things away, like washing and toys - I'm not allowed. I suppose I shouldn't be complaining but then I think - what is there left for me to do?!

The only thing I won't relent on is letting them cut their hair. They have a trim every few months but I won't let them cut it short. Ellen had a chin length bob just before Jassie was born but I almost cried, they cut off all her lovely locks. Girls should have long hair - I'm sorry if anyone disagrees! So they still need help tying it back but I'm happy to do that! Ellen and Jassie have long black shiny curly hair half way down their backs and Simie's is wavy rather than curly and reaches her bottom.

It's a nightmare when one of them catches head lice but we're old hands at getting rid of them now!

Sorry to go on - I went off on a bit of a tangent there!

Dont worry hun im used to your little rants now lol we all have them afer all lol. I think girls look so cute with long hair but i have to keep cutting Hopes as she has propper ringlets and they get matted so easily and i feel so sorry for her when i have to brush them out cos she is in tears! Even trying to wash Hopes is a night mare as she hates the water getting into her eyes and on her face as we only have a shower she hasnt really got much choice lol

Oh my look at the time! must dash its 5 past midnight! lol Night all x

Try running the hairbrush under the tap for a few seconds to make it wet before you comb Hope's hair. Jassie was born with MASSES of hair and we had to tie it back from her face with a clip even before she started sitting up! This is what I used to do to get her hair combed.

Failing that, just do what my brother and sister in law do when their girls refuse to comb their hair - if it's not a school day, don't bother! Life's too short and you have to pick your battles!

Nina, my oldest started last September and it was really weird. She looked so grown up in her unfirm but still seemed so young at the same time. admitedly she's an august baby so always very young for her age. she's only just turning 5 this weekend!
goodness known what it will be like when they all go to school and there's noone around at home. can't imagine that at all! good luck in a couple of weeks - i'm sure Jassie and Mummy will both be fine! ;o)

*lol* I think we'll be OK. I only just realised last night that the start of term isn't "3/4 weeks away" like I've been telling myself for weeks now - it's less than 2 weeks away and I've bought my girls NOTHING! Panic stations! Why do I do this every single year? Everything's left till the last minute for school even though I'm really organised the rest of the time for everything else!

We may have a couple of problems because Jassie wants to wear her summer sandals to school, has decided that the lunch box I found her in the Monsoon sale (fairies - SO cute) is her school bag and she won't wear trousers, she wants to carry on wearing her red and white gingham dresses!

It's all good fun! Anyone else prepared for school yet?
