confusing 5 yr old!!!!

My eldest was 5 in march.  She has always been very vocal in her dislikes, but has got worse lately.  She has 1 or 2 tantrums a week, and are always BIG!  If I try to calm her down, she gets worse, so ends up in her room until Daddy gets home at 6.  She will become physical with me, whch is very unnerving as her 3-yrold sister now copies and has adopted the same tone of voice as her sister when arguing with me!  She is very independant and determined, does very well and is popular at school, and is otherwise a good child.  She has also started lying to us and her teachers, but not about anything important.  Any advice would be greatfully recieved!

Oh dear, that sounds tough. I really sympathise as it's a nightmare knowing what to do.

Firstly, I'd suggest trying to talk to her when she's not having a tantrum and ask if there's anything worrying her. Does she think anything's changing in her life? Is she being bullied - an awful thought, but it happens very young nowadays?

When she has a tantrum, I'd suggest two things: 1) Distract her and try to get her to do something else or 2) Ignore her - that's my preferred one. It might be difficult, but if when she starts kicking off, leave the room and do something else. If she doesn't get any attention, she may hopefully start to do it less.

Good luck
