33 Stone Teenager

I was reading on thesun.co.uk this morning about a 15 year old girl who weighs 33 stone and my heart just went out to her. She can barely walk with all the extra weight she is carrying. The comments people left on the website were cruel enough, so I dread to think what her fellow school kids are saying to her. Kids can be so cruel. She has also been banned from her school canteen - a teacher said she wasn't welcome there anymore?! I would make a complaint about that, that's just shocking!

I know this is a very personal subject, but I blame the parents in these cases, especially in the case of very overweight children. They haven't been taught good eating habits in the first place and in most cases they are copying overweight parents (the mum of this girl weighs 20 stone). They need to be educated, both parents and children, in eating and exercise.

Would love to know what everyone else thinks of this, even if you disagree and think I'm too harsh :o)

i agree with what youve said i never read the story but you have to feel sorry for her, but has she tried to do anything about it herself? as the old saying goes you can take a horse to the water but you cant make it drink. i reckon itll affect her im many ways physically mentally in all aspects of her health, its so hard to believe, what will she do with all the loose skin if she does loose weight? i think shes goin to battle all her life with this prob if she manages to live that long, i dont mean that nastaly but her heart etc must be under so much pressure. if her parents wont help her then i think she has to make a stand and do whats right for her, e.g loose the weight, if she wants to.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this way. But something should have been done long before she reached that weight. The girl weighs nearly 3 times what I do and she's less than half my age!

It's all about education in eating and exercise and also managing budgets. This girl's mum said that she couldn't afford healthy food but a load of junk food and takeaways can be costly too.

Our neighbour across the road is obese (and I mean, obese and not just overweight) and there are constantly delivery foods being taken to their house. Her son and husband are as thin as rakes but they are out a lot and her hubby works nights - her son is always out and about on his bike in all weathers. But her daughter, bless her, is the same age as my 9 year old and is overweight herself. To the point where she's out of breath just walking across the street to our house. She doesn't go on her bike anymore as she gets out of breath (worrying) even though she could do with someone telling her to use the bike MORE if she feels that way! I just feel sorry for her, but daren't say anything because her mum is a bit of a battle axe - am I a wimp?!

hi nina. gosh you're not a wimp for saying nothing. i reckon if you did you'd get an earful. the thing is people in that situation know there's a problem but refuse to do anything for some reason. sometimes its because they're scared and sometimes its because they're literally blind to it.
Also if a child hates sport, then parents tend to just assume their child is 'not sporty' and accept that they'll struggle to exercise. there's so much you can do to get exercise, though, and it's a case of wanting to find things, rather than assume they'll be offered to you. Sad, isn't it?

Exactly, I'm glad for your reassurance about not saying anything to her mum. I do feel sorry for obese kids though because they're missing out on so much. And yes, it is about finding an activity they enjoy and putting some effort into getting them there and organising your life around it etc etc.

I'm not sure that kids' diets are that much worse these days then in our generation (my mum deep fried almost everything that wasn't an Indian meal!), but maybe they have MORE food than we did and they are definitely less active. All our games were making dens and playing in the garden. I find myself monitoring how long the girls play on the computer or the playstation these days.

And which s0d thought up 24 hour kids TV channels?! My girls would watch TV all day if I let them!
