Only 1 in 100 eat well - I don't have a hope in hell!

hello people,

I'm new to the site but am a bit of a food freak. Rather I discover all the ways I should be eating well and ignore them and feel guilty about it. Genius, yeah?

Anyway, I was flabbergasted when I read today on the Daily Mail abot how less than 1 in 100 people actually meet their daily nutritional needs. Actually women come out a little better at 1.2% but STILL!

How depressing is this? Does it make the rest of you think 'sod it, I just won't even bother' or has it spurred your determination?

s far as I'm concerned I'll keep trying but it got me down a bit. It's so hard trying to remember what you should and shouldn't eat that this makes it seem an impossible task!

Anyone got a good suggestion for a tasty superfood? At least if I incorporate one or two of those I'm on the way!

Hello there Pretty Polly - your post made me laugh out loud because as I was reading it, I was chomping on Pringles!

I do agree that it's daunting to read stats like that but, really, where DO they get these stats from?! 1 in a 100? How many people were surveyed? And who did they survey? Do you see what I;m getting at here?

Mind you, I'm always reading about the rise of heart disease, diabetes and obesity too (we are kindred spirits - I love reading about this sort of thing too!) so how wrong are those stats? It's all very confusing.

For healthy eating recipes and exercise tips, this website is very good for ideas, I've found. It helps to read the labels on things too andunderstand what they mean.

It is hard work, but I believe it's all about setting good habits for yourself. I drink 4 pints of water every day and start the day with a pint of water and then a glass of juice. I've never been able to eat breakfast but I do eat 3 pieces of fruit before lunchtime. Then I try to have either a serving of salad or veg with either my lunch or evening meal. Most days, I manage 5 portions of fruit and veg quite easily.

My downfall is snacks and not getting enough exercise but you can't have it all! I always say that if I could stop snacking, I'd easily lose this extra stone, but then I'd be miserable and do I really want to lose the weight that badly?!

Don't sweat the small stuff. It will make you stinky.

Hi Nina,
Wow, sounds like you manage really well getting your five a day. Are you based at home? Do you find that helps? I tell myself I find it hard being in an office but I think that's an excuse.

I know what you mean about the stats too. You never really know where these come from or how many people were involved. Seems like there's one scare story after another.

And I agree that if you're happier with the extra stone then why worry, it's not like you're lots of stones overweight.

Hi Kitty

No, I work in an office! It is very hard work trying to eat healthily but I usually find that if I put off snacking for as long as possible, then I don't want to snack either. I'm a lot better at home because I'm more active and we don't have a cupboard full of junk food called the junk shop at home!

I find it helps to take all the food you're going to eat that day to work with you. If you rely on going out for lunch, then you run the risk of picking unhealthy things to eat. It takes planning, but I think healthy eating takes planning anyway. It's when we don't properly plan time for food that we end up eating rubbish.

Also, don't be too hard on yourself. If you don't always make 5 pieces of fruit or veg a day or don't drink as much water, tomorrow's another day.

Don't sweat the small stuff. It will make you stinky.
