sex ed in primary schjools

I cant believe the govnerment are thinking about teaching sex education to 5 year olds. i don;t want my little one knowing about that yet - its too early.

sreuly its up to parents as much as schools to teach sex to their kids. i want to wait till she shows an interest. anyone else agree?

I agree with you - it's too early in Primary school to be teaching them about sex. I know kids are growing up fast but there's no need to help them along! It should be up to the parents to decide before they get to secondary school - by the time most kids reach this age, they're going through puberty and so want answers.

Having said that, I bought my 9 year old a book this summer explaining the facts of life because she had lots of questions for me and I've never kept sanitary towels and things secret from them. She was ready, I felt, so I bought her this book and then we had a talk about it. She knows she can ask me as many questions as she likes.

But she's not 5 years old being taught this at school!

Exactly, Nina. 9 is the kind of age, I'd expect to start facing that sort of thing, not 5.

I want my girls to get excited by lego, dolls, books and other toys not sex. It's not about demystifying sex, it's about making sure they enjoy their childhood for what it should be.

They are really good points. If my eldest didn't have so many questions, I would have been happy to leave it until she did. It's the same with the other two - I'll tell them when they're ready, not at a certain age.

Kids are growing up FAR too fast. All these girls who get pregnant at 12 or 13 - I'm sorry but I still thought boys were disgusting and smelly at that age! I didn't even start to get attracted to boys until at least 14, I'm sure! There's too much pressure on kids to grow up faster.

Don't even get me started on make up and adult style clothing aimed at young girls. My eldest has started wearing training bras (she would kill me if she knew I'd posted that!) but I said a very definite NO to padded training bras. There were some in her size in Primark, Asda and Tesco! Can you believe that? I know I read something about it in the news but I honestly thought it was an exaggeration.
