Question for Fitness Fanatics!!

Hi all,

I have been going to the gym now for about a month and although i wasnt expecting to drop two size dresses in that time, im really fed up because i have actually put on a pound!! I came to terms with this because i know that muscle weighs more than fat and all that...but when i actually came round to measuring waist, boobs, etc they are all the same! How can this be?

I have been eating fairly well...no junk food, but the occasional treat! Also my body normally responds really well to dieting alone, so now that i am exercising too i thought i would have more of a result than this!

Does anyone have any tips/reassurance for me?  Im not that into dieting, i prefer to eat healthy rather than diet as i feel that realistically it is the only way i will stick with it!

Any advice will be much appreciated!

 Thanks!

Hiya,

Firstly, well done for joining the gym and sticking with it. You'll reap the benefits of that, not just in terms of weight loss but with being more fit and active. It's all good for you.

With regards to losing weight, I don't really know how to reply because you didn't say in your post what you've been doing at the gym - maybe you need to try different exercises to burn more calories and fat? I would suggest you see one of the gym instructors for advice. If you tell them what you want, they should be able to tell you what you need to do, you're paying gym membership, you might as well make full use of it!

Also, you don't say how much weight you need to lose. The less you have to lose, the harder it is to come off - I've heard that from so many people. Ideally, I'd like to lose half a stone to get rid of my "jelly belly" as my girls affectionately call it, but it's hard work and I like my food too much so I've learned to live with it!

You sound like you've got a good, positive outlook on eating healthily and exercising regularly - don't let this put you off. You're still doing yourself lots of good.

Don't sweat the small stuff. It will make you stinky.

Hi ya Nina,

Thanks for the tips, sorry my message was a bit vague! I am currently 12 and a half stone but i also am 5,8 so its not too overweight.  I would ideally like to lose a stone and a half to feel healthy again! My middle is sooo round - Horrible! I am doing resistance training (weights etc) for about 20 mins, as advised by the gym instructor and about half an hour cardio (cross trainer, bike etc), but i think i need to up that to really burn the fat off.  I dont really have any problems with my legs and arms, they seem ok, but its my middle.  I also have polycystic ovaries so that really affects weight gain around the middle of me.  Anyone have any advice for that? I also swim once a week too, so i cant see where i am going that wrong.

On a normal day i will normally eat cereal or toast for breakfast, sandwiches or pittas for lunch, and any home cooked dinner...i dont drink that much water and have lots of tea.  I rarely drink in the week, but have the odd glass of rose at the weekends.  And at the weekends i do like eating out, well you have to live a bit!  I wonder if any of my eating habits is affecting it?

Thanks!

Hi K

It does sound like you have a few stubborn pounds to shift. I can't see what you're doing wrong eating-wise, unless you have snacks as well? They can mount up - it might be worth keeping a food diary to monitor it. Your diet sounds pretty healthily - but maybe you could cut down on carbs a bit?

Dunno really! I would just put up with the extra weight (like I have been doing!) - life's too short to worry about a little bit of weight like that!
