Isn't the odd glass of wine OK?

I've been reading about new goverment guidelines that are telling parents that children under 15 should never be given alcohol.

Now I don't know about you, but i used to have the odd shandy and glass of wine on a sunday with roast dinner and i haevnt got a drink problem. Isn't this just a bit heavy-handed? the odd beer of wine isn't going tohurt is it?

You had me at 'hello!'

Yes, I also used to sip beer from dad when I was little, he thought it was funny! And the odd glass of wine sometimes, but only a little bit.

What's the thinking behind that anyway? Will it cause long-term damage?

It's all about knowing where to draw the line isn't it? The french are meant to start their kids young on wine, giving them sugar lumps dipped in wine when they're around 3. But this is meant to get them to start behaving like adults in a good way not a bad way, treating them with respect. I haven't been to France much but to be fair they're not famous for being a bunch of booze-mad bingers - that's more the British if we're honest

the thing is the french eat and drink in such a different way to us, some parts of their culture are based around enjoying long meals and bottles of wine, whereas we have a binge drinking culture and i should think eat more junk food than the french. but it's a difficult one because part of me thinks: stop telling me how to bring up my kids, and then on the other hand i see 11 year olds off their faces every weekend due to booze - and worse, so maybe we need people to tell us about these things

I know what you mean Slummymummy, I don't like being told how to bring up my kids either - I happen to think I do a pretty good job! But there are others who seem to lack basic parenting skills.

I heard on the news today that the government think working mothers are to blame - apparently, we're too independent which causes rifts in the family as we're not dependent and don't have to answer to our partners as much. Also, we're not there as much for our children.

It's made my blood boil actually! At my girls' school, there are children whose both parents don't work and they are neglected - in fact there are more of these families than working families who neglect their children. Because I'm fulfilled in my job, it makes me happier at home and the time I spend with my kids is more quality time.

Anyway, I will get off my soap box now! Thanks for reading this!

I think you've hit the nail on the head there. That's a fantastic way to be. You're officially a cool mum!!

Thank you! I do suspect that I'm a cool mum, but it doesn't hurt to hear it from other people. I doubt my daughters would agree - especially my eldest. She normally just shakes her head in despair at me!

Ah well, you know the drill... the schoolfriend goes 'Wow your mum's so cool, I wish mine was like that' and the teenager sniffs, 'you can have her'!

(I actually remember saying that once. Shame on me! Of course, now I realise just how wonderful and cool my mum really is...)

You never really appreciate your parents till you're older... then you discover, if yours were anything like mine, that they were right all along! It still galls me, that. My mum was fond of saying "you'll understand when you have kids of your own" and now I know exactly what she means!

My eldest is just very fond of criticising me and telling me to stop dressing so scruffily. She picks out my work clothes for me and insists on coming clothes shopping with me. I mean, what IS wrong with living your life in a baggy t-shirt and scruffy jeans? But she loves me really.... really really deep down!

My little one is turning into a carbon copy of her (my middle one is much more laid back, in fact, she's scruffier than me!) - on Tuesday morning, she was watching me get dressed and said to me "Not wearing a vest mama? It's berry berry cold outside. You should put vest on". I put a vest on in the end to shut her up!

 Hello,

God the government never stops does it?! That's just gonna make more kids wanna rebel at younger ages! Trust me; I'm 16 and I know that when they brought in that bloody smoking ban and made it at 18, more shops just starting going against the law, and more kids kept talking about it and just going against the whole law too.

It's stupid and unnecessary. As long as they don't have too much ofit and become alcoholics, it's all good.

If I have kids, I'll let them drink every now and then at the age of 12 if they really want to lol!
