Parenting classes - are you joking?

the latest mad idea by one of the poltical parties is to give people parenting classes - how daree they? who will decide if one way of bringing up your child is better than another.

Can you imagine if they chose claire veritys way - stick your kid outside in the fresh air and never cuddle it.

most of us do what we do by instinct and as long as youre good enough your kids will be OK. am i right?

You had me at 'hello!'

people assume that once you've given birth your maternal instincts will just 'kick' in and you'll suddenly know what to do.....I don't think so! I would have loved to have had someone help me throug the tough times with my daughter.

I'd be offended if anyone told me how to bring up my kids. I agree, it is instinct but it's really tough for parents now. Nothing is clear-cut & we all feel so guilty, particularly after watching those parenting programmes! I think they do mroe harm than good. You don't want your kids to watch them cos u don;t want them picking up any bad habits by watching all those naughty children!!! and you end up feeling a useless parent yourself because you haven;t got a star chart or a naughty stair and have no intention of starting one!!!! Parenting classes would probably make you feel the same. Inadequate. Just use your common sense.

Am in two minds about this one. On the one hand, I would feel very annoyed if anyone told me how to bring up my kids (I don't like getting suggestions from even family or friends!), but then you see how some people bring up their kids and I wonder... Do you think parenting classes could teach nutrition and safety in the home? Parenting is such a huge subject, I wonder how they'd cover everything...

Most of us are good parents with the basic instincts needed but you have to agree that some people (and we all know someone like this) are definitely lacking!
