Make your Christmas even cuter with this adorable homemade gift tag!

Patch is a cute little penguin with a soft cotton wool tummy. Not only does he make our hearts melt with his puppy dog-like googly eyes, he can be used as a gift tag to cheer up any Christmas pressie.

Turn 1 A4 sheet of black card into 6 gift tags using our illustrated step-by-step instructions, then call your kids over to decorate and create their very own Patch the penguin. Your little ones will love getting their hands messy and if you're all feeling really creative, try experimenting with different decorating ideas, like sprinkling white glitter on to Patch's tummy instead of sticking on cotton wool.

Or transform white card gift tags into snowmen using mini pom poms for a nose and buttons, then glue a ribbon around his neck for a scarf.

Age group: Kids as young as 3 can get involved in making Patch the penguin - they will just need help cutting out shapes for Patch's shoulders, beak, flippers, feet and tying the ribbon on at the end.

Step 1

1. Gather Patch the penguin craft equipment together...
Find a flat surface to work on and gather together all the craft materials you need to make 6 cute Patch the penguin gift tags.

Step 2

2. Make 6 identical gift tags...
  • 2a. Take a sheet of black A4 card, fold it in half, open it out again and fold each flap in towards the centre fold, as shown in picture 2a.
  • 2b. Next cut down the centre fold so you're left with two long sections, as shown in picture 2b.
  • 2c. Cut each section into 3 equal-sized gift tags (about 7cm long), using a ruler and scissors, as shown in picture 2c.
  • 2d. When you've done the same with the other section, you will have 6 equal-sized gift tags, each ready to decorate, as shown in picture 2d.

Step 3

3. Shape Patch the penguin's shoulders and make his beak and feet...
  • 3a. To shape each Patch the penguin gift tag, use a ramekin/cup and pencil/pen to draw rounded shoulders at the top, making sure you leave enough of a fold at the top of the gift tag, as shown in picture 3a.
  • 3b. Carefully cut out the shoulders using scissors, as shown in picture 3b.
  • 3c. Take a sheet of orange card and draw 1 small triangle shape at any corner of the card, for the penguin's beak, and 2 crown-like shapes, for the penguin's feet, as shown in picture 3c.
  • 3d. Cut out Patch the penguin's feet and beak, then fold the beak in half and open it out again to make it stand out, as shown in picture 3d.

Step 4

4. Have fun decorating Patch the penguin...
  • 4a. For Patch's the penguin tummy: To decorate each gift tag, take 1 unravelled cotton wool ball and cut it in half. Next spread a little glue stick on to Patch's tummy, then stick on 1 half of an unravelled cotton wool ball, leaving enough space for Patch's head at the top, as shown in picture 4a. Trim off any excess cotton wool and leave to dry.
  • 4b. For Patch the penguin's flippers: Open the gift tag and lay it flat with Patch's tummy facing you, then carefully use a pair of scissors to make a snip on either side of Patch's tummy. Start snipping from each bottom corner, towards Patch's tummy and stop snipping just before his tummy. Then fold and gently bend each flipper to make them stand out, as shown in picture 4b.
  • 4c. For Patch the penguin's beak and feet: Stick on the orange beak shape at the top of the cotton wool tummy with a dab of PVA glue. Next stick the orange feet, upside down at the bottom of Patch's tummy, as shown in picture 4c.
  • 4d. For Patch the penguin's face: Stick on 2 goggly eyes above Patch's beak, with 2 dabs of PVA glue and leave to dry, as shown in picture 4d.

Step 5

5. How to put the finish touches to Patch the penguin gift tags...
To finish each Patch the penguin gift tag, draw two dots on the beak for nostrils, then punch a hole at the top of Patch's head and thread a short piece of ribbon through the hole and knot it.

Decorate the other 5 gift tags, then that's it, you have a colony of 6 waddling penguin gift tags, ready to play with, write in and attach to your lucky recipients' Christmas presents.
