Turn a plain white cushion into a thing of beauty with this family tree cushion cover idea.
Children will love to draw and write all their family members onto a pretty tree and it’s a great way to get them to practice their writing in a fun and crafty way.
If you wanted to make it more detailed you could create more levels of branches, from grandparents, through parents and onto children, just like a traditional family tree.
Just remember that you’ll need to allow more room on your cushion, so maybe make the main trunk a little shorter.
Don’t worry if you don’t have a sewing machine, you can still make this family tree cushion cover craft. This is the perfect project to make if you already have plain cushion covers that need an update, saving you the time of making one!
You will need
-Sewing machine and cotton threads
Cut the fabric to size, including seam allowances. Put the centre of the fabric over newspaper and, using fabric pens, draw the tree, add the names and write ‘family’ at the base. Use fabric paint for the leaves, then leave to dry.
Make the opening by turning a seam over twice and machining along the edges. Make sure that the seams are folded inwards. With the painted side facing up, create an envelope cover by folding one end of the fabric over the tree, then bringing the other end over the top. These back pieces should overlap.
Pin and sew in place along the top and bottom edges – use a zig-zag stitch along these seams to prevent fraying. Turn the cover the right way round and iron, covering the painted area before you do so.
