I tried the Gluten Free Diet

I tried the Gluten Free Diet

It took a long time for me to be diagnosed with coeliac disease. For years I was told I had IBS because the symptoms were quite similar. But the stomach cramps and diarrhoea got worse and worse until I was eventually doubled up with pain. I was also very underweight despite eating loads. Many people thought I was anorexic. It was only when I insisted my GP did a blood test that I found out I had coeliac disease - and that I'd been eating the wrong foods for years.

At first I was quite scared about eating anything and got really paranoid. I stuck to a very extreme diet of meat and vegetables which I knew wasn't good for me. Gradually, I learnt more about gluten and how to read food labels. I also started getting gluten-free bread and pasta on prescription, which is a huge relief as they can be very expensive.

I started feeling better about two months after cutting gluten from my diet. It is hard to do, especially when I eat out at restaurants but it's worth it to feel healthy and free of pain.

My daughter was diagnosed with coeliac's disease last year she was 20. In the beginning it was dreadful and very hard as she loved breads and pasta..... she has not eaten either since. We bought everything for her to try out; she is a very 'fussy' eater. Over the year I have bought in most gluten free items and my husband and I use them as well. I make gluten free pancakes, scones, and have even tried the gluten free cake-and she likes them. Recently she has tried and liked the small muffins. Tesco, and Sainsbury carry a good range of gluten free goods. Her 21st birthday is on 28th June and we are having a party for her. I will make a gluten free cake for her and have an ordinary one for the rest of the guests. In the beginning it was hard to remember everything e.g. when cooking I cook Caroline's meat first and put it aside covered. She has a separate tub of butter in the fridge too. All GF stuff is kept in a separate drawer in case of contamination. It's not so bad when you get use to it.
