Muscle tone is important for maintaining an effective metabolism - lean tissue burns up to nine times more calories than fat.
Although all exercise tones your muscles, using weights or your own body weight as resistance really steps up the muscle toning.
If you're familiar with exercise, create a mini circuit at home. An effective routine alternates upper body moves such as press-ups, sit-ups, tricep dips and bicep curls with tins of soup, along with lower body moves such as squats and lunges.
If all this sounds like another language, Davina McCall's My Three 30 Minute Workout DVD £17.99 or £13.98 from Amazon has a section entitled 'The Pump', which is a great muscle-toning workout.
Whichever you choose, do it twice a week for at least 30 minutes.
