Question

Hi, I had a baby nearly 3 months ago. I was 8st10lb before I got pregnant and went up to 12st12lb during my pregnancy. Now I've got down to 10st7lb but can't seem to lose any more. I'm considering doing the Atkins Diet but I'm worried I'm not going to have any energy while doing the diet. Can anyone tell me how they felt on the diet?

Some people find the first two or three days difficult because they feel tired and might get a headache. But after that their energy levels return to normal and some people even feel much better once they're into the diet.

The Atkins Diet is good if you only have a stone or two to lose. The first phase of the diet will put your body into 'ketosis', which is when your body uses its fat stores for energy, so you burn fat. But it's not a good idea to be in ketosis long term.

See our guide to the Atkins Diet or why not look at our diets to find something that takes your fancy or try our diet quiz to find the perfect diet for you.

Question:

I've been going to the gym for two weeks and I've also been doing the Atkins Diet for this time. Although I have been having two slices of toast in the morning before the gym for energy, I've cut out my beloved potatoes, crisps, pasta and rice. So why have I only lost 3lb?

Does anyone know if beetroot is high in carbohydrate? I've been eating quite a bit of it and was wondering if this had anything to do with my slow weight loss.
Thanks

Lulu

gtk user response:

Beetroot does have carbohydrate in it. Most nutritional value can be found at www.nutritiondata.com

Atkins works by going into a process called 'ketosis' - this is where your body has to use body fat to function. This process only occurs if you are consuming less than 40g of carbs a day - your slow weight loss is probably due to the fact that you are consuming more than this by eating toast in the morning and beetroot. Good luck! :)

Thanks Gemma. Yes, that's right, beetroot does have carbohydrate in it but you can eat it on the Atkins Diet, although only half a cup, which is around one handful of chopped beetroot - plus it has to be raw, not the cooked or pickled stuff. And if you are eating toast then you will find weight loss is slower.

It's great that you are going to the gym, this will help to burn fat. It may be that the scales aren't showing as much weight loss as you'd hoped because you've built up a bit of muscle and muscle weighs more than fat.
