One look at her holiday snaps forced Jane, 50, to beat her sugar addiction and lose over 4 stone. Find out how she did it and follow her diet - devised by food nutritionist Monica Grenfell
Jane's story
Most of us can't wait to see our holiday snaps. But for many, like Jane Carter from Swindon, it was a realisation that she'd been burying her head in the sand over her weight.
Already 49, she didn't want to be fat and 50, so she decided to lose it as safely and quickly as possible.
'It was my holiday photos that did it,' says Jane. 'I knew I was overweight and I'd done diets before and never managed to lose more than 2st as I was hooked on sugar. Then I saw those ghastly photos and knew I'd gone too far.
'Ice cream was my downfall - I could go through a litre-sized tub in two days. I always had bags of sweets in the car. And there was always an excuse - a bad day at work, my daughters leaving home or just feeling out of sorts.
'I went to Monica for help. Instead of a simple weigh-in, she brought a fat monitor. I was 45 per cent fat, which she said was clinically obese, and my body's metabolic age was 75. It was a terrible shock.
'Monica told me this fat level could kill me and that my sugar addiction could bring on diabetes. Suddenly I realised cheery Jane was a walking time bomb. It would have been easy to give up there and then, but Monica said it could be the last day I'd ever be this weight. If I started today I'd weigh a few ounces less each day and it'd all mount up.
'My problem was sweet food. Monica devised a diet that banned added sugar but also controlled starchy foods, such as potatoes, that send blood sugar rocketing. I couldn't eat between meals and had 1,200 calories a day. I also had to exercise to burn more fat.
'The weight came off gradually and there wasn't a week when I didn't lose any. My fat level is now 28 per cent, which is healthy, my abdominal fat is down from a dangerous level eight to level five, and I lost 45lb of fat in four months. I love the compliments and I've never missed ice cream. I just see it as junk now - junk that I was addicted to. And there's only one way to deal with an addiction - just say no and don't let it into your life again!'
