The hidden 1,000 calories in your diet

The hidden 1,000 calories in your diet
Average rating: 3 out of 5 star rating

Did you know that you could be eating an extra 1,000 calories a day without realising it? Recent research has shown that many of us underestimate the calorific value of foods, overestimate the right portion size and then we don't count a handful of sweets here, a takeaway coffee there as part of our daily food and drink intake.

One goodtoknow user didn't know about this extra 1,000 calories and was amazed by what she discovered after keeping a food diary for a day.

Mother of five, Sally Bartlett, 37, from Lancashire (pictured above) wrote down everything she ate and drank over 24 hours to see how those hidden calories added up.

Sally says: 'I would like to lose a bit of weight but I don't know what I'd eat because I'm quite good already. I'm also quite active because I have a part-time job in a bakery, where I'm on my feet all day. And I've got five kids to run around after, so I don't really know why I'm overweight.'

Follow Sally's food diary and see if you can spot the 1,000 hidden calories and what food swaps we recommend. Maybe you're making the same mistakes too...
