When your baby hiccups in the womb

If you're feeling a short, jerky, rhythmical movement coming from your bump, then chances are your baby has hiccups! This is perfectly normal - they're just practising their breathing and helping the lungs expand and develop properly.
Babies don't breathe properly until they're born, because in the womb they get all their oxygen from the placenta via the umbilical cord. Sometimes when a woman has a scan, she can see her baby hiccupping as the midwife listens to his heartbeat with a hand-held Doppler ultrasound probe.
