Pregnancy: Finding a midwife

As long as you've done your own pregnancy test there's no need to go to your GP for tests to confirm it. The first thing you should do is contact your surgery and ask for a booking appointment with the midwife. Most mums-to-be don't need to see a doctor in their pregnancy; as long as everything is straightforward, they'll have midwife-led care. She will arrange your scans and also take blood tests later on in your pregnancy.

Your midwife will also help to plan your care, and ask you questions about your medical history; it's an opportunity for you to ask questions, too. She'll have lots of information for you to take away and will give you contact numbers in case you have any concerns later on.

Anne Richley, midwife.
