Stitches after birth

The person who's been caring for you usually does your stitches. If the doctor has done a forceps delivery, he'll do the stitching, but if a midwife has been caring for you, then she'll do the 'repair'.
You'll be given a local anaesthetic first to numb the area, but if it hurts you must ask them to stop until the pain relief is effective. If you're having a home birth, have an Anglepoise lamp ready to improve the lighting, in case you need to have stitches afterwards. Fortunately, the stitches dissolve so you don't need to worry about having them removed.
