Five rules for a safe pregnancy

1. Read the list of ingredients on any food, drink or medication. If you're still not sure, check with your midwife or the pharmacist.
2. Don't assume 'natural' means safe. Lots of alternative remedies are considered unsafe in pregnancy, including certain homeopathic remedies and Chinese herbs. Ask a qualified practitioner for advice, and always tell them you're pregnant.
3. Don't give in to peer pressure. Just because your best friend is on her third pregnancy and thinks it's fine to carry on drinking and smoking doesn't mean that you have to do the same. Think for yourself, and make your own choices for you and your baby.
4. Use your common sense. If food looks like it's been lying around in the hot sun for hours or you don't know what's in it or how it's been prepared, steer clear.
5. Don't let anxiety ruin this special time. The sense of responsibility for the baby growing inside you can be overwhelming. But feeling relaxed and happy is important for your wellbeing, and you can't do that if you worry about every tiny thing.
