All-terrain pushchairs
All-terrain pushchairs (ATPs) are designed to be used on terrain such as country tracks and footpaths, as well as pavements. They tend to be larger than most other pushchairs, with chunky, pneumatic tyres and added suspension for a more comfy ride and manageable push across bumpy ground.
You really only need an ATP if your lifestyle means that you regularly take your baby across rough ground such as beaches, country tracks or muddy lanes. That said, ATPs are popular in towns too, and parents who like jogging find them lighter and easier to manoeuvre. As most ATPs have pneumatic wheels, punctures are a likely hassle you'll have to deal with.
What to look for if you're buying an all-terrain pushchair:
- Accessories: Check it comes with a rain cover and cosytoes, or budget for them as essential extras.
- Comfort: Is the seat well-padded and does it recline far enough for a newborn?
- Size and weight: Can you lift it in and out of the car easily? And where will you store it at home?
- Suspension: How smooth is the ride?
- Quick-release wheels: These are especially useful for buggies too bulky to fit into a small car boot.
