Why buy a highchair?
A highchair is one item of baby equipment you shouldn't be without. Once you start feeding your baby solids, you'll find it so much easier if he's sitting in a chair. But with so many different designs on the market, it can be tricky deciding what would fit you and your baby's lifestyle. So here are some useful pointers.
Things to consider
- Safety. Does it have a safety harness?
- Practicality. If you don't want it out all the time, does it fold up easily and compactly? And if you want to move it around, does it have casters?
- Adjustability. Does it have various seat heights and an adjustable foot rest?
- Wipe clean seat or removable covers. Make no mistake, this piece of furniture will get very mucky!
- Nooks and crannies. The best designs have few, if any, little places for puréed carrot and mashed banana to hide in.
- Padded seat and a recline mechanism. An older child will want to sit more upright *than a baby.
Which type?
1. Folding highchair. Folds flat for easy storage if space is limited.
2. Multi-position design. Has a height-adjustable seat and footrest.
3. Convertible highchair. Becomes a toddler's low table and chair.
4. A baby-to-adult seat. The footrest and seat height adjust as your baby grows.
