Mainstream nurseries and how to decide

Average rating: 3 out of 5 star rating

Most mainstream nurseries adopt the Foundation Stage Curriculum. It's part of the Government's 10-year childcare strategy, introduced in September 2000 as a distinct form of education for 3 to 5 year olds.

Its purpose is to give guidance to adults who work with little ones, to make sure that all children have reached a similar level of education by the time they begin the National Curriculum. Most Montessori nurseries have aims that match the Foundation Stage Curriculum, but they use their own methods to achieve them.

The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) says that the key principle is that children need a balance of adult-directed and child-initiated activities. To be effective, the Foundation Stage Curriculum should be carefully structured and include 'planned and purposeful activity that provides opportunities for teaching and learning both indoors and out'.

What to look for when choosing a nursery

Start early when choosing nursery and pre-school placements, as they can fill up faster than you think! Word of mouth can be invaluable in finding a good nursery. But nothing will beat your own gut feeling.

Spend time visiting each option. Nursery atmospheres should be happy and fairly relaxed, with lots of activities available. Check staff-to-child ratio, and turnover. Look into staff qualifications, how they discipline children and if the environment is bright, clean and safe.

Children learn best through play and by having fun. Socialising and friendships are what your child needs now, rather than academic rigour. If you feel your child would have a sense of belonging, enjoy new experiences and friendships with the other children and adults, you've probably found a winner.
