When your child moves class

When your child moves to a different class

Make an appointment to see the headteacher (not the class teacher) to find out exactly why this has happened. It doesn't seem fair to split up two friends but there might be good reasons. Ask the head to explain why the change will be beneficial for your daughter.

Although there may be no formal streaming, the new class might be better suited to your daughter's needs. If so, ask the head how you can 'talk up' the benefits of being in a different group, for example, if the teacher is particularly nice. There are also tips which children can follow to make new friends:

  • Be friendly to other children.
  • Never tell tales.
  • Look out for another child who doesn't have an obvious friend.

As far as asking questions goes, find out what projects your daughter will be covering and at weekends help her with simple research so she feels more confident in class. Practice with easy questions at home and give lots of praise.
