Helping your child cope with their first day at school

How to help your child cope with their first day at school

On your marks

Whether you're heading for school or nursery, there are things you can do to make the transition easier. There will almost certainly be open days where you and your child can meet the staff and have a look around.

Point out things your child is particularly interested in, such as the craft activities or play equipment, so they can look forward to trying them out.

Your child will probably find it much easier to cope in her new environment if she's mastered key skills such as getting dressed and undressed, being able to recognise her name and use the toilet on her own. Let her practise at home, and do less for her so she gets used to being more independent.

But don't panic if your child struggles with these tasks, as abilities vary when little ones are young, and you can be assured that the teacher will be on hand to help. If you do have any concerns, talk them through with the staff, who will be very experienced, as well as ready and willing to help.

Get set

When the big day comes, ensure you are calm, relaxed and well prepared, even if it involves getting up an hour earlier. It'll mean you'll be in a position to give your child reassurance and positive attention, which will help give her the confidence boost she'll need for that important step.

Go

If your child is unfamiliar with the staff, make sure you physically hand her over, introducing her at the same time. For example, 'Emily, this is Mrs Smith, who'll look after you until I come to collect you.' Don't just dump your child and run. However, once she's settled and happy, don't hover, anticipating problems, or confuse her with last-minute instructions. Just kiss her goodbye and leave.
