What to do if your toddler still wants to be carried

A toddler who wants to be carried

Many toddlers insist on being carried everywhere instead of going under their own steam. It seems that no matter what age or weight children are, there's always a time when they want to be carried and looked after again like a baby.

Sometimes these little regressions come when they need a little bit of extra support for some reason, and good old mum is usually their first port of call. Ask yourself whether anything has changed for your toddler recently, for example starting at nursery, or the arrival of a new baby sibling. Sometimes it can just be that he's reached a new developmental milestone such as becoming dry at night or moving into a new bed.

To avoid power battles, try humouring your toddler with extra cuddles and holding him as you would when he was younger. Spend a little extra time playing and reading with him for a few days, reassuring him that you are there to take care of him.

When your toddler asks to 'come up', acknowledge that you know he wants to be carried, but offer hand holding instead and try the distraction of a little game of hopping or jumping to jolly him along.
