How much milk should a breastfeeding mum be producing?
In the early days of breastfeeding, many new mums worry about whether or not they're producing enough milk. There'll be times when your little one feeds more often and for longer; these are growth spurts and you'll produce more milk to meet the increased demand. Your milk supply is fine if your baby does the majority of the following most of the time:
- Feeds 8-12 times in 24 hours
- Has 6-8 wet/dirty nappies a day
- Gains 4-7oz (100-200g) a week, or 14oz-1lb 12oz (400-800g) a month
- Looks well and alert, with periods of rest between feeds
