Holidaying with kids
Make life easier by:
- Putting aside holiday clothes a week before you travel and banning anyone from wearing them.
- Pack basic first-aid and routine medicines in your hand luggage in case you need them on the way.
- Give kids individual back- packs with light items like underwear, which they can unpack themselves.
- Have a bag of unseen, cheap goodies to keep them quiet during the journey.
- Relax rules and lower your behaviour expectations. They're bound to get bored or tired at some time en route.
Safety
Holidays are a time to relax. But as a parent, you can never afford to be off your guard. Check out the swimming pool: which is the shallow end? Is there a lifeguard? Are there other potential problems, like older children diving in and bumping into smaller ones?
What about kids' clubs?
Before booking your child a place, ask the following:
- What's the staff/child ratio? (This may vary abroad, but it should be no more than 1:15 for school-age kids and ideally 1:3 for babies and toddlers).
- What's the minimum and maximum child age?
- What qualifications do the staff have?
- How many speak English?
- How can they get hold of you in an emergency?
- Do they have supervised mealtimes? Great for giving you time for yourselves.
