How to live with teenagers
- Do ask your teenagers for their opinions in general conversation, and listen to them.
- Do respect them and value their privacy. Knock before entering their rooms, and don't listen in to phone conversations.
- Do show you love them and tell them they matter.
- Do set expectations of good behaviour, routines and ground rules.
- Do welcome their friends into your home. If you don't approve of a friend, explain why clearly and honestly.
- Don't go for knee-jerk punishments such as grounding your teenager for three months, then have to back down. Take time to cool down, then explain why you are upset.
- Do encourage interests, especially sport, to increase self-esteem.
- Do keep an open dialogue about what they're doing, but don't quiz them about where they are at all times. If you think they're being bullied, taking drugs or having sex too early, don't be shy of talking about your concerns.
