Finances at university
When your child prepares to go off to university, it's important to sit them down to have a chat about finances. You should tell them to budget sensibly and take special care not to overspend on their credit card if they have one. You should also suggest they opt for student accommodation for as long as possible as it's cheaper than private renting and good for socialising.
Seeking weekend or other part-time jobs can help pay for extras and make sure you check on the family home contents policy as some do cover students living away from home. You may also find it worthwhile to run through the household bills with your child and help them plan a week's budget.
