Advice on potty training
Many children find it difficult to do a poo in a potty. They can become possessive, not wanting the poo to be flushed away. The less fuss made, the better. So praise her successful potty trips, and let her poo in the nappy for a few more weeks. Then, when the focus is off, use rewards for poos that she does in the potty.

Hi! My little boy Aaron has just turned 3 and is still in nappies... He uses the potty fine for everything, we have no trouble with that. The problem is as long as there is something covering his bum he will do his business in it! He knows when he needs to go either for a pee or a poo as when he is wandering around with a bare bum he dashes to the potty by himself. Put a nappy or a pair of pants on him and he seems oblivious to it all! I can't keep him half naked all day every day as we have quite busy days where we are out/in the car. I have tried pull-ups but he just sees them as another nappy, which they are really. If anyone has any thoughts, comments or advice on this I would be most grateful - my 4 year old boy Elliott was out of nappies at 2!!

My son is 3 and a half years old and i admit i have left it a little too late to toilet train him but he starts nursery after easter and he is still not completely dry during the day, hes getting used to it and as the days go on hes getting better and better, but, he will not do a poo on the potty or the toilet, as he starts nursery soon i dont want him to do it in his underpants while he is there. I have tried literally everything, from bribing him to taking him out to buy some big boy pants to get him to go but it seems like he keeps it in all day because as soon as i put his nappy on for bed he poos right away. I really need all the advice you can give me as there is nothing else i can do.

My son is 2 and 3 months and is now dry in the day. Like Louise's daughter he hated the potty and toilet so we ended up buying a Fisher price potty chair that is much more comfy but was expensive, but it worked and now he will go on the smaller potty and the toilet. I wondered if this chair might work for helen's boy too cos it plays music when you wee which might be an incentive? Helen have you tried stickers and treats for a wee?? I could do with some poo advice! He's great at wees always tell us and has very few accidents, but is hysterical when he needs a poo and spends whole morning really upset when he feels it coming - today so upset he cried for a nappy on and went to bed early, not sure what to do, he gets a special treat when he does poo on the potty or toilet, but it's such a horrible upsetting morning every other day at the moment and he's not going as regularly as he did in nappies. Help??

All the articles I read comment about children not wanting to POO in the toilet. I have a little boy who is 31 months and will sit on the toilet at regular intervals, will tell me when he has a dirty nappy, likes wearing big boy pants.... but, when he sits on the toilet, he wil NOT wee. he is relaxed whilst on the toilet but will hold it for hours if need be rather than wee on the toilet or the potty. Any advice please.

This is for Helen Taylor. Is your little boy's Dad still with you? Or another male close to your family? Have you let him go to the toilet when an older male goes for a pee so he can see what goes on? It may sound a bit odd or unpleasant, but us girls don't tend to stand up so boys don't get to see what happens or how it is done normally! When we were potty training our little boy, he regularly went to the loo with Daddy and found it fascinating and copied him all the time. He would also stand up to pee in the potty, but his aim wasn't very good so used the toilet quite happily instead! I hope this may be of help to you, good luck! :-)
