Babies who struggle to sleep on their back
The safest position for sleeping babies is on their backs, with their feet to the foot of the cot. But some can't settle like this. If your baby's one, you're not alone.
Generally, if you place him on his back to sleep from the outset, he'll get used to it. Keep trying for as long as you can. Once a baby can roll from back to front and back again, it's safe to let him find his own position. If he won't settle, focus on the other guidelines to help keep him safe:
- At night, keep him in your room until he's six months.
- Room temperature should be 16-20°C.
- Don't let anyone smoke near your baby.
- Encourage him to sleep in his own cot.
- Avoid bed-sharing if you or your partner are exceptionally tired; have had drugs, alcohol or tobacco.
- Never sleep with your baby on a sofa.
