Body care in pregnancy

Massaging your tummy and rubbing in body creams and oils during pregnancy can be both a treat and a treatment for you and your baby. It encourages early bonding with your little one and helps you to feel more relaxed and pampered.Hopefully, it'll also help minimise the appearance of stretch marks.

You can also ask your partner to lightly massage you, helping him feel more involved with your pregnancy. The best position for massage during the middle months is lying on your back propped up by pillows. Nearer full term, you may be more comfortable on your side. Remember to massage your tummy lightly, never pressing down too hard.

What are stretch marks?

Stretch marks develop when the skin becomes stretched beyond its normal elasticity due to weight gain and changes in hormone levels during pregnancy. They tend to appear as red indented lines but fade over time into pale, silvery streaks.

Can I prevent them?

This depends on your skin type, with some skins far more prone to them than others, as well as how much weight you put on and how quickly. Keep the skin supple by applying oils and moisturisers and try to avoid gaining too much weight too quickly.
