Developmental toys: 6-12 months
During this stage, your baby will learn to sit up without support and develop some sort of movement - whether it's crawling, walking around the furniture or the delightful bottom shuffle.
Imitation
Your baby will love to copy you and will be desperate to play with the contents of your handbag. You might not like the idea of buying them a toy phone but they will love it - though they'll probably still try and steal yours!
Best buy: Soft singing phone - £8.99
Language and observation
You might have read to them from a young age and looked at books together, but it's now that they will follow them more intently. They will begin to like or dislike certain parts of the story and enjoy feeling different textures and seeing different pictures.
Best buy: Tiny Love 3D Activity Book £11.18
Movement
Most babies won't walk at 9 months, but there's no harm in giving them some gentle encouragement. A baby walker that's sturdy and secure could help to get your little one off their bottom and on to their feet - and if you invest in one that's fun to play with sitting down too, your money won't be wasted if they don't take to it.
Best buy: VTech First Steps Baby Walker £29.99.
