Mum Knows Best

  1. To help my son sleep in the day, I used to put him in a hammock hung from the door frame. The gentle swinging motion would help him to sleep and he'd often stay asleep for three hours. Charlotte Highman, 33, mum to Harry, 15 months
  2. Ditch as much of your housework as possible and don't stress because the house is a mess or there's ironing to do. Your baby will sense you're calm and, with luck, he'll be calm, too. I know it worked for me - Daniel is a chilled-out, happy baby!
  3. I started getting really bad headaches when I was about 12 weeks pregnant, but forcing myself to drink two litres of water every day really helped.
    Jennifer Shepherd, London
  4. Before you go out and buy lots of expensive maternity clothes, have a good rummage through your wardrobe. You'll probably be surprised at how much stuff can be adapted or worn a little differently to still fit you!
    Natalie, mum to Bobby
  5. Finding baby clothes difficult to iron? Use a travel iron, so much easier to get those teeny weeny clothes looking smart.
  6. Drink ginger tea to beat morning sickness - it really works!
    Jenny, pregnant with baby no.1
  7. I thought I'd love breastfeeding, but I dreaded feeds. I'm much happier since I stopped. I'll have another go with my next baby, but I won't beat myself up if I still don't like it.
By Annabel Harper, 26, mum to Rebecca, 22 months
  8. To help beat morning sickness, as soon as you wake up - eat a piece of dry toast.
  9. My breastfeeding tip is to always keep your back straight by either sitting in a straight-backed chair if you've got one, otherwise by supporting it with cushions.
Louise Drysdale, 28, mum to Rosie, Berks
  10. I was convinced the TENS machine I used wasn't working because labour still felt very painful. However, it was only when I took it off that I realised it had been effective, as I could feel the difference. It got me through the first few hours until I got in the pool, where my baby was born. Michelle, mum to Sam, 6 weeks
  11. If you're set on having a natural birth, read up on visualisation and breathing techniques so you feel strong when the time comes. It really helped me when I was having Honey.
    SJ Drew, Paignton
  12. If you have trouble sleeping in pregnancy, read a baby names' book. The monotony of the list means that by the time you reach 'D', you'll be gone!
Emily Gale, 31, from London, mum to Madeleine, 2, and 35 weeks pregnant
  13. When it's all going pear shaped, rebalance yourself with a move that's a bit yoga-ish. Sit comfortably; inhale for the count of 3, exhale for a count of 6, until you feel calm. You'll find you can't breathe and count and hold on to stressful thoughts!
    Woman Magazine
  14. If you're uncomfortable in bed, or suffer backache, tuck one end of a v-shaped pillow between your knees to get your hips level, put the 'v' under your bump and cuddle the top. It was my midwife's idea - it also cured my insomnia.
Isabelle Jacobs, 34, from Edinburgh, mum to Paul, 3 months

Struggling to come up with a baby name? Well, you might think about looking at what the celebs call their babies - because it's the hottest trend in baby names right now.

According to the latest birth figures, more and more people are choosing to call their kids Shiloh, Suri and Cruz than ever before.

The most popular celebrity baby boy's name is Lennon, son of Oasis singer Liam Gallagher and his ex, actress Patsy Kensit.

This is followed by Brooklyn, made famous by Victoria and David Beckham, and Devon in 3rd place - the name chosen by Nell McAndrew for her son.

Also in the top 10 for celeb baby boys' names that are becoming more and more popular are Rocco, Madonna and Guy Ritchie's son, Kingston - Gwen Stefani's son - and Jordan and Peter Andre's choice Junior.

When it comes to girls, Madonna's choice again proved popular with Lola - her daughter Lourdes' nickname - topping the list.

Other popular girls' names include Shiloh, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's daughter, Apple, Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin's daughter and Tom Cruise's choice of Suri.
