Kids' Parties: Party theme dos and don'ts

There are two golden rules of giving your kids party a theme:
1) Make sure they agree to it. There's no point choosing pirates, if they really want a jungle-themed party
2) Ensure it's suitable for boys and girls. Most parties include both sexes and although a Spiderman party may be exactly what your 6-year-old boy wants, any girls who come to the party may not be quite so impressed.

What you can theme

You can personalise some, all or none of these

  • Invitation: to save work, simply make one and then photocopy it
  • Fancy dress: you don't have to do anything. Just make sure you give the partygoers (and their parents) enough notice!
  • Food: you don't have to spend ages making anything specific - simply come up with clever names. Batspit juice for Halloween, instead of fruit juice, for example!
  • Games: just rename classic ones. Why not do 'pin the tail on the monkey' if you're doing a jungle/animal themed party
  • Cake: The one thing that really does need some preparation. Either colour your own icing, or buy ready-rolled icing and get some icing pens to add the decoration
  • Decoration: Choose your colours to suit your theme. Green for jungle, orange and black for Halloween. Then simply get hold of some balloons and crepe paper to decorate the walls, doors and tables for instant effect. Coloured paper is also useful for cutting out shapes, such as spiders for Halloween or skull and crossbones for a pirate party. Quick, simple and effective.
