Once you've sorted out the theme, decorations, food, party bags that's all there is to it, isn't it? Well, maybe, but these tips might also help to make sure your party runs smoothly.

Check your dates carefully: Before you choose your date, check with your child's best friends to make sure they're around.

Organise helpers: The best parties have lots of helpers who can be on hand to sort out any emergencies or just give things out

Have plenty of black bags: Clearing up as you go along will make life a lot easier

Limit your party to a couple of hours: Unless you're having a sleepover, 2 hours is more than enough time for a good kids' party.

Prepare name badges: You many know who everyone is and the kids may know each other, but the helpers won't. If you've got time, make a special themed badge for everyone. Otherwise, a marker pen and sticky labels will do the job.

Have matches to hand: It's amazing how difficult it can be to find something to light the candles with, when it comes to the birthday cake.

Let them get on with it: Parties are made for kids to jump up and down and go bananas. Obviously, draw the line at any behaviour that might damage something or result in injury, but by and large over-excitement is a good thing

Don't open presents: If you're not at home, wait to open presents later. If you are, find a table or somewhere to put them out of reach.

Keep an eye on all the children: It's impossible to please everyone, but do look out for the odd one or two who may be sitting quietly in the corner. Check if there's anything they want

Don't forget the camera: Check the batteries beforehand

Plan more than you need: Make up an extra party bag and have enough extra food, just in case an older or younger brother or sister want to stay

Have plenty to do: you'll need to keep the guests entertained from the moment they arrive, so make sure there are some suitable toys that everyone can play with until everyone arrives. Also make sure you've planned extra games.
