Let your imagination run riot. Here are some ideas to get you started...

Jungle/Animal: even if you don't want to make it fancy dress, this is very easy to theme and doesn't usually take much effort

Pirates: One of the most popular. You could have a treasure hunt in the garden or the house, with chocolate money as treasure

Superheroes: Perfect for boys who are into Spiderman, but fun for girls to dress up too

Film star party: You could give out prizes for the best costume, best dancing etc in the style of the Oscars

Aliens: Easy to rename food so it sounds as if it's from space, like flying saucer sandwiches. This could also tie in with Doctor Who

Mr Men: Good for younger kids - easy to dress up as the likes of Mr Strong, or little Miss Chatterbox

Magic: If you want to hire an entertainer, this makes a magic party even easier. You could also teach kids some magic tricks. Black and red is the order of the day here

Pyjama party: A good one for older kids and sleepovers are always great fun

Balloon party: This involves minimal effort - you might only need to get creative with games. Perhaps teach kids how to model balloons, or just get a specialist in to do a show

Underwater party: Lots of blue decorations - mermaids, sharks, Neptune and the like should give you lots of inspiration.
