If you've got family coming round and you need to keep kids and adults happy, try playing a game. As well as being fun it also spares those awkward silences. We've got all you need to know about some of the most popular party games.

The game: Wink murder

How many players? 4 or more

The objective

The murderer tries to win by killing all the people in the room without being caught by the detective. The detective tries to win the game by finding out who the murderer is.

How to play

  • One person leaves the room to be the detective.
  • While the detective is out of ear shot the people left in the room decide on who will be the murderer.
  •  When the murderer is chosen the detective is allowed back in the room and has to find out who the murderer is.
  • No-one is allowed to speak.
  • The murderer has to kill the other people in the room by winking at them, however, he or she has to do it without the detective finding out.

When the murderer has winked at you, you have to pretend to die, and the more dramatic your fake death, the better!

The game: Blindman's Bluff

How many players? 4 or more

The objective

The 'blind' person wins by identifying the people in the room by touch alone. The other people have to avoid being caught and identified but they can't hide or run away but they can move about to make it harder.

How to play

  • One person is blindfolded and spun round
  • The person with the blindfold has to move around the room and identify each person by touch alone.
  • The other people in the room need to move around a bit so it's hard for the person wearing the blindfold to find people.
  • Whoever the 'blind' person correctly identifies, they swap places and wear the blindfold.
