It's thought that the baby triggers labour, producing hormones when it gets too cramped in the womb.

You are now 37 weeks pregnant or in your 38th week if that's how you're counting it

How is your baby growing?

Your baby will now measure about 47cm, weigh 6lbs and is considered full term, so could be born at any time.

Most of the slippery vernix that coated and protected her skin will have washed off, but it'll have enough left to help her slide down the birth canal.

How are you feeling?

You may swing from feeling very tired to having sudden bursts of energy when you start 'nesting' in preparation for the baby coming.

You'll probably be offered a test to check if you carry the Strep B bacteria around now. It's found in the vaginas of about 10% of women and can be harmful to your baby if passed to them during vaginal delivery. Antibiotics can be given during delivery to lesson the risk.

Top tips

Keep a list of important numbers in your handbag or near the phone. Include your hospital or midwife, your partner or birth companion, and your own hospital reference number to give when you phone.

Give a copy to your partner or a friend or family member. Work out how you'll get to the hospital. If you haven't got a car, ask a friend or call an ambulance.
