Pregnancy questions: feeling faint, sore gums and hayfever

Here, Angela Horler, an antenatal teacher for the National Childbirth Trust and an independent midwife answers some of the most common questions throughout your second trimester.
19. I keep feeling faint every now and again, should I be worried?
Fainting in pregnancy is normal for some women; changes in blood pressure, the weight of the baby or low iron stores can all contribute towards fainting.
Eating and drinking regularly throughout the day, taking a good pregnancy supplement that contains iron, and taking your time to stand from sitting may help you to feel less faint. If fainting becomes a real problem discuss it with your midwife.
20. My gums are really sore and I'm worried about infection, what should I do?
Bleeding gums is a very normal (although not very pleasant) side effect of pregnancy! Dental treatment is available free on the NHS during pregnancy, so pay a visit to your dentist and make sure your teeth and gums are in good health.
21. Is it safe to take hay fever tablets, I can't stop sneezing!
Not all anti-histamines (the hay fever drugs) are suitable in pregnancy. Pharmacists are the experts in over-the-counter medicines and may be able to tell you what is safe to take, otherwise consult with your GP.
