Here is the knitting pattern to help you create mother hen and her adorable chicks in both yellow and green.

How to knit mother hen:

Body:


With 3mm needles and Yellow, cast on 10 sts for tail end. P 1 row.
1st inc row: Inc kwise in each st - 20 sts. P 1 row.
2nd inc row: [Inc in next st, k1] to end - 30 sts. P 1 row.
3rd inc row: [Inc in next st, k2] to end - 40 sts. Ss 3 rows.
4th inc row: [Inc in next st, k3] to end - 50 sts. Ss 5 rows.
5th inc row: [Inc in next st, k4] to end - 60 sts. Ss 7 rows.
6th inc row: [Inc in next st, k5] to end - 70 sts. Ss 15 rows.
1st dec row: [K5, k2tog] to end - 60 sts. Ss 5 rows.
2nd dec row: [K4, k2tog] to end - 50 sts. Ss 3 rows.
3rd dec row: [K3, k2tog] to end - 40 sts. P 1 row.
4th dec row: [K2, k2tog] to end - 30 sts. P 1 row.
5th dec row: [K2tog] to end - 15 sts. Break off yarn, thread end through remaining sts, pull up tightly and secure. Gather cast-on edge, pull up tightly and secure. Join row-ends together leaving an opening. Stuff firmly and close opening.

Head:

With 3mm needles and Yellow, cast on 10 sts. P 1 row.
1st inc row: Inc kwise in each st - 20 sts. P 1 row.
2nd inc row: [Inc in next st, k1] to end - 30 sts. Ss 17 rows.
3rd inc row: [Inc in next st, k2] to end - 40 sts. P 1 row. Cast off. Gather cast-on edge, pull up tightly and secure. Join row-ends together. Stuff head firmly. With seam at back, place head at front end on top of body and sew in position.

Neck trim:

With 3mm needles and Yellow, cast on 4 sts.
Pattern row: Cast off 2 sts, place st used in casting off back on to left-hand needle and cast on 2 sts - 4 sts.
Repeat pattern row, 14 times more. Cast off all sts, thus forming a ring. Place trim ring over head and sew inner edge along cast-off edge of head.

Beak:

With 3mm needles and Coral, cast on 2 sts. P 1 row.
1st inc row: Inc kwise in first st, k1 - 3 sts. P 1 row.
2nd inc row: Inc in each of first 2 sts, k1 - 5 sts. P 1 row.
3rd inc row: Inc in first st, k2, inc in next st, k1 - 7 sts. Ss 3 rows.
1st dec row: K1, k2tog, k2, k2tog - 5 sts. P 1 row.
2nd dec row: K1, [k2tog] twice - 3 sts. P 1 row.
3rd dec row: K1, k2tog - 2 sts. P2tog and fasten off.
Fold beak in half widthways and join row-ends together. Pin folded edge vertically to centre front of head and sew in position. With Black yarn, embroider eyes either side of beak.

Comb:

With 3mm needles and Green, cast on 8 sts.
Beginning with a k row, ss 2 rows.
Divide for points: * Next row: Cast off 5 sts, k to end - 3 sts. P 1 row.
Next row: Cast on 5 sts, k to end - 8 sts. P 1 row. *
Repeat from * to *, once more.
Next row: Cast off 5 sts, place st used in casting off back on to left-hand needle and cast on 5 sts, k to end.
P 1 row. Repeat from * to *, twice more.
Cast off all sts.
Fold comb in half, matching points and over-sew around all edges. With folded end of comb at back, sew straight edge to top of head.

Wattle:

With 3mm needles and Green, cast on 3 sts. P 1 row.
1st inc row: Inc kwise in each of first 2 sts, k1 - 5 sts. Ss 7 rows.
Dec 1 st at beginning of next row and 2 following alternate rows - 2 sts.
P 1 row.
Inc 1 st at beginning of next row and 2 following alternate rows - 5 sts.
Ss 7 rows.
Dec row: K1, [k2tog] twice - 3 sts. Cast off.
Fold wattle in half and join around all sides. Place short shaped edge vertically to centre front of head between beak and neck trim, then sew in position.

Wings (make 2):

With 3mm needles and Green, cast on 8 sts. P 1 row.
Inc row: Inc kwise in first st, k to last 2 sts, inc in next st, k1.
Repeat last 2 rows, 3 times more - 16 sts. Ss 5 rows.
Dec 1 st at each end of next row and 6 following alternate rows - 2 sts.
P 1 row. K2tog and fasten off.
Position wings at sides of body and sew in place.

Feet (make 2):

With 3mm needles and Coral, cast on 8 sts.
Divide for digits: Next row: Cast off 6 sts, k to end - 2 sts. P 1 row.
Next row: Cast on 6 sts, cast off 6 sts, k to end. P 1 row.
Repeat last 2 rows, 3 times more.
Cast on 6 sts, then cast off all sts.
Fold foot in half, matching digits and over-sew around all edges. Place feet at front end of underside of body, and sew back end to body.

Tail

With 4mm needles and Yellow, cast on 16 sts for feather.
Change to 3mm needles and cast off tightly.
Make two more, one in each of Yellow and Green.
Place Green feather between two Yellow feathers and catch together at one short end.
Place this end to back on body and sew in place.

For the yellow chick:

Body:

With 3mm needles and Yellow, cast on 10 sts for lower edge. P 1 row.
1st inc row: Inc kwise in each st - 20 sts. P 1 row.
2nd inc row: [Inc in next st, k1] to end - 30 sts. Ss 3 rows.
3rd inc row: [Inc in next st, k2] to end - 40 sts. Ss 11 rows.
1st dec row: [K2, k2tog] to end - 30 sts. Ss 5 rows.
2nd dec row: [K1, k2tog] to end - 20 sts. P 1 row.
3rd dec row: [K2tog] to end - 10 sts. Break off yarn, thread end through remaining sts, pull up tightly and secure.
Gather cast-on edge, pull up tightly and secure. Join row-ends together, leaving an opening.
Stuff firmly and close opening.

Beak:

With 3mm needles and Coral, cast on 2 sts. P 1 row.
Inc row: Inc kwise in first st, k1 - 3 sts. P 1 row.
Dec row: K1, k2tog - 2 sts.
P2tog and fasten off.
Fold beak in half widthways and join tiny row-ends together.
Pin folded edge vertically to centre front of head just below 1st dec row and sew in position.
With Black yarn, embroider eyes either side of beak.

Wings (make 2):


With 3mm needles and Green, cast on 4 sts. P 1 row.
1st inc row: Inc kwise in first st, k to last 2 sts, inc kwise in next st, k1.
P 1 row. Repeat last 2 rows, once more - 8 sts.
Dec 1 st at each end of next row and and 2 following alternate rows - 2 sts.
P 1 row. K2tog and fasten off.
Position wings at sides of body and sew in place.

For the green chick:


Work as Yellow chick using Green instead of Yellow and vice versa.
