'It's not the Oscars!'

Teenagers at prom

Karen is mum to 14-year-old twins and it's far from a walk in the park. Every week, she reveals all the ups and downs of living with teens.

'The Year 11s have just had their prom night and my daughter has been scouring the photos on Facebook in her typically judgemental way rating the dresses, the hair, the make-up, the dates. I have to say I was shocked by the lengths these kids are going to glam up for the occasion and the amount of money parents are spending.

One lady I know actually took the day off work to ferry her daughter between the hairdressers, the nail bar and the spray tanners! Another mum down our road actually spent £450 on a dress for her daughter (without telling her husband I might add). Has the world gone mad, or am I missing something? This is a 16-year-old going to a party for a few hours not the flippin' Oscars!

Now I know that children grow up in an unequal society and that not all have the same advantages but I couldn't help wondering what it must feel like to be one of the kids whose parents couldn't afford to splash out on ball gowns and limos. There's a girl in my daughter's tutor group whose mum can't afford to buy her a winter coat let alone a taffeta dress and tiara. It's a shame that some kids might be made to feel like they're missing out on what's supposed to be a special day.'
