Karen is a mum of mixed sex, 15-year-old twins. And knows it. Each week she shares with us what her teenage two have been up to.
'The other week I was being 'taxi of mum' and driving my daughter to some sort of after-school activity. It was a non-uniform day the next day and so I casually asked her what she was going to wear.
"Well I haven't got anything so I am going to have to wear these leggings," came her petulant reply.
Now first of all, that statement was sheer nonsense as she has a wardrobe stuffed to bursting with clothes. Secondly it was designed to provoke as the leggings she was wearing were full of holes.
"You're not wearing those to school. Look at the state of them."
"Well I'm going to have to," she replied, sulkily.
Without saying another word I reached across, stuck my hand in the nearest hole and tore half the leg off. "Well you won't be wearing them now," I stated calmly.
I swear it was the funniest thing. She was literally stunned into silence and, as shock tactics go, it was remarkably successful. I didn't get dragged into some ridiculous ongoing row, she didn't have any choice but to find an alternative outfit and she was left in little doubt that you don't mess with the mother!!!
I know it was probably bad parenting, but what is it they say... you don't negotiate with terrorists?'
