'Do I look bothered?'

(7 ratings)
Teenage girl and mother back to back

Karen is a mum of mixed sex, 15-year-old twins. And knows it. Each week she shares with us what her teenage two have been up to.

'There's a bit of a role reversal going on in our house at the moment. According to my daughter I'm an embarrassment to her!

So, it's happened. She's gone and got her first proper boyfriend. He's tall and lanky with a mop of hair that makes him look like an Echo and the Bunnymen reject. Her twin brother thinks he's a bit of an arse, but then in his world anyone who doesn't play football, box and pump iron is automatically written off as a bit of a wimp.

Now although she's been seeing him for a few weeks she's been keeping him firmly under wraps... until last week, that is, when he turned up on our doorstep unannounced at about 11.30pm. (She was having a sleepover with 3 of her friends which I suspect was what had prompted this impromptu visit.) I told him that I was sorry but we were going to bed and it was too late for him to come in. Daughter looked miffed but knew better than to take me on in front of her friends.

There was a 5-minute conversation on the doorstep and a bit of talking out of her bedroom window before my husband went out and sent him on his way. We made sure we hid all the keys before going to bed so they couldn't let him in after we'd gone to bed and that was that.

Two days later my daughter left me waiting at the station for her for 40 minutes in the freezing cold.  When she finally breezed up, she hopped in the car and said: ‘Can we give Ellie a lift home?' Now the words straw and camel's back spring to mind. I started having a little rant about her being inconsiderate and not giving any one else a second thought. We dropped her friend home and that's when she turned to me and said:

"Do you know you're making a really bad impression on my friends lately."

My reply was a classic teen strop: "And do I look bothered?"'
