Little girl who lost her family in a house fire is having her Christmas dream come true

Safyre Schenectady's story will melt your heart

This is Safyre Schenectady, who tragically lost her family in a house fire in 2013. Her Christmas wish is to receive cards from all around the world, and you can help.

Two years ago, Safyre was the only survivor at a fire in her home in New York. She was found next to her father, David Terry, who protected his little girl from the blaze using his body.

She lost her father and her siblings - Layah, three, Michael, two, and Donovan, 11 months - after someone set fire to the stairwell that led to her family's apartment in May 2013.

Although she survived, Safyre was left with burns over 75% of her body, and has had to have multiple procedures since then.

Speaking to Buzzfeed, Safyre's paternal aunt Liz Dolder, who now has sole custody of Safyre, said: 'Safyre has had multiply operations, over 50. She had lost her right hand, three months after the fire and lost her left foot in March. She continues to have problem with her mouth due to the scar tissue tightening up. Her next operation on January 5th.'

Now, two years after the terrible tragedy that robbed her of her family and her home, the eight-year-old's Christmas wish is to receive cards from all over the world.

When her aunt bought her a Christmas card holder, Safyre got instantly excited to fill it up. This would probably be hard to do as the card tree holds 100 cards.

But determined to make Christmas, a time all about family, as happy as possible for her niece, her aunt Liz made an appeal on Facebook, asking for people to send Safyre a Christmas card and make her Christmas wish come true.

So far the post has had over 18,000 shares, so we bet Safyre will be able to fill her Christmas card tree and have a few to spare.

In the first few days, Safyre received 14 cards from countries like Italy, Sweden, Russia and the United Kingdom, but this number promises to grow quickly with the amount of comments her post has received!

Her aunt Liz said: 'When she opens these cards, the twinkle in her eye and the sparkle in her smile are priceless.'

Safyre's life hasn't been easy so far, but her aunt Liz spoke to Today Parents about how the little girl is an inspiration to everyone around her.

'Safyre lost everything — her father, her mother, her sister, her brothers, her home, her favorite toy, her favorite outfit — everything that was familiar to her. She even lost the one thing we all take for granted — her reflection. But she wakes every morning with a smile on her face. She is the true definition of hope, faith and love.'
