Mum spends three days bonding with son who passed away thanks to temperature controlled 'cuddle cot'

'I felt like I was able to be a mum to him, and that's something I'll never forget'

A mum who was able to spend three days with her baby son after his death thanks to a 'cuddle cot' is fundraising to help other bereaved mothers have the same positive experience.

Becki Wilson's son Carter-James passed away in February 2016, and she was given the opportunity to bond with him for a further three days with what is known as a 'cuddle cot', which keeps the baby at a suitable temperature - something she says she'll 'never forget'.

'I got to dress him, got to wash him and got to stare at him for hours like any other mother would,' she explains.

'Being able to do that made a dramatic difference. I felt like I was able to be a mum to him, and that's something I'll never forget.'

After her sad loss, Becki met another family whose child had died and wanted to use the cot as well, but it wasn't available.

Adding that the discovery 'broke her heart', she began fundraising for another cuddle cot for the hospital where Carter-James was born, to be donated in his memory.

Her initial campaign raised more than £2,000, more than enough for another cot, and now Becki has relaunched her appeal to mark her son's first birthday.

'The Cuddle Cot enables a family whose baby has died to spend a little bit more time with them. The Cot cools the baby, slowing the natural processes that occur after death,' the JustGiving page details.

'As you can imagine saying bye and parting with our beautiful boy was one of the hardest things we've ever had to do.'

'Our experience was made peaceful and dignified and a hell of alot easier by the staff at wythenshaw neonatal and the help of the "Cuddle Cot."'

'I'm eternally gratefully to them for helping to make my boys 16 hours and some time after the most magical of my life. Thanks to them I got to feel like his mummy I got to hold, cuddle and dress my baby like every mother should.'
