Reality TV celeb Whitney Port has opened up about missing her late father more after welcoming her son, saying that 'amazing times' can be 'coloured with darkness'.

The former The Hills star took to Instagram to share with fans the bittersweet feeling she's been having after welcoming her son Sonny earlier this year.

The mum opened up in another chapter of her video series - 'I Love My Baby But' -where she's been discussing several topics around motherhood as a first time mother.

Alongside a clip of the video, where she's visibly emotional, Whitney wrote: 'As some of you may know, I lost my dad to kidney cancer almost 5 years ago. It has been a traumatic and grief filled world for me for so many reasons. Simply put, he was my dad. He was the main man in my life for almost all of my life and really ruled at it. I miss him every single day.

As some of you may know, I lost my dad to kidney cancer almost 5 years ago. It has been a traumatic and grief filled world for me for so many reasons. Simply put, he was my dad. He was the main man in my life for almost all of my life and really ruled at it. I miss him every single day. More recently, really since Sonny was born, I find myself missing him more and more. Itâs unfortunate how such amazing times in ones life, like getting married or having a baby, can be colored with such darkness. Again, I hate to be a total downer, but this is the reality of so many of our lives. We are so happy but then quickly feel the loss of their presence and itâs really hard to come to terms with. In this Chapter of I Love My Baby But, I Miss My Dad, we discuss what I miss most about my dad, what I would ask and say to him today, how to continue to honor him and how to pass on the lessons he taught me so his legacy lives on and on and on as he deserves. Iâd love to know how any of you out there who have lost parents have taught your children about them and kept the spirit of them alive. Comment below. Link in bio to watch full video.

The 32-year-old then added that the feeling of loss has intensified ever since becoming a mum.

'More recently, really since Sonny was born, I find myself missing him more and more. Again, I hate to be a total downer, but this is the reality of so many of our lives', she wrote.

'We are so happy but then quickly feel the loss of their presence and it’s really hard to come to terms with.'

Fans of the new mum were quick to comment on her post to share their own experiences of going through the happy moments in life after losing a parent, with many also writing about how they keep their memory alive in their children's lives.

One wrote: 'I lost my father 28 years ago. I still miss him everyday. It seems to get more difficult when I grow older and not having him around with all the special moments in my life💔'

A second added: 'I lost my father 11 days before my son was born 3 years ago. I tell my 2 children stories and show them pictures of him often. I also let my daughter have the one doll I have left that he gave me. Whitney, thank you for sharing your story 💔'

A third also commented: 'I’m so glad u shared. Lost my father when I was pregnant with my first son now about to have my second. The void in my heart is tremendous but I refuse to allow my children to not know who he was or what he stood for.'
